There is the suggestion that being short may cause people to experience the world ever so slightly differently, in that those of a more diminutive stature may experience senses a little sooner than those that are taller. How can this be? Well this can be demonstrated as follows, and will let you in on the secret that there is actually some gain to be made by being shorter than you might have wanted to be.
Consider the fact that you have two ears and two eyes etc, yet you experience every stimulus at the same time regardless of where in terms of location, the stimulus was perceived. To explain this a little clearer, if someone were to click their fingers on the left side of your body, your left ear should theoretically pick up the sound first, followed by your right ear as this is the ear that is further away. This is not what happens though, is it? If you think about it, you hear that sound once and this is because your brain creates the feeling of simultaneity so that you don’t hear a subsequent sound in your right ear.
This may sound baffling that your brain is able to achieve such a perfect result and you might be wondering how this is possible to do. It is hypothesised that the brain must wait for the slowest signals to arrive first in order to achieve the desired result. It sounds as though the brain is waiting for a considerable amount of time but in truth the delay would last only around a tenth of a second.
You may wonder how you deal with this delay in sound if your eyes have perceived the sound already, in that you witnessed the person click their fingers. Again, it is theorized that your brain allows for your eyes to synchronize the sound to the event so that it seems simultaneous. Being able to operate as close as possible to the here and now is an ability that is necessary for our own survival, and keeping this delay as short as possible is very important.
If we consider this in terms of height and the sense of touch then we can start to see how it relates to the idea that being shorter may have an advantage over taller people. If a person touches your nose and your toe at the same time, you would imagine that you would feel someone touch your nose first because your nerves would send the signal to your brain first because your nose is nearer to it. In actuality you experience both senses at the same time because your brain accounts for the delay to make it seem like you felt them at the same time. It would make sense though that the further away your toes were from your nose the longer the delay would be. If your brain is waiting for the slowest information to come through first – from your toes – so that it can make up the difference, then it would make sense that the further away the last sensation was, the longer this would be and the longer you would have to wait to feel it. As such, it could be theorized that the taller you are, the longer you will wait to experience senses.
So, being short is not all bad, there are pluses and minuses to everything so it is good to know what they are. If you are thinking about addressing the issue of your height, though, it is important to do your research first. Look at what options you have.
